Home EV Charger Installation: Everything You Need to Know
Electric vehicles are now mainstream in Sydney, and the best way to charge your EV is at home overnight. A dedicated home EV charger is faster, safer and more cost-effective than relying on public charging infrastructure.
Level 1 vs Level 2 Charging - Level 1 (standard 10A outlet): Uses a regular power point. Adds roughly 10–15km of range per hour. Fine for plug-in hybrids, too slow for full EVs. - Level 2 (dedicated EV charger): A hardwired 32A circuit adding 50–120km of range per hour depending on your vehicle. This is what most EV owners install.
What's Involved in Installation? 1. Switchboard assessment: Your electrician checks available capacity and installs a dedicated circuit. 2. Cable run: A new cable is run from the switchboard to your garage or driveway. 3. Charger mounting: The EV charger unit is wall-mounted and connected. 4. Testing and certification: The installation is tested to Australian Standards and a Certificate of Compliance is issued.
Do I Need to Upgrade My Switchboard? Possibly. If your switchboard is old or already near capacity, an upgrade may be needed before the EV charger is installed. We assess this at the time of quote and let you know upfront.
Cost in Sydney A standard home EV charger installation typically costs $800–$1,500 all-inclusive depending on cable run length and whether a switchboard upgrade is needed. We provide a fixed price before starting.
